BRUSSELS—The year 2023 will begin at Lempertz with an auction devoted to the art of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas that will likely capture the attention of international collectors.

Scheduled for February 1, it will include a selection of pieces from the collection of the late Seymour Lazar, a Palm Springs-based lawyer, investor, and close friend to many of the cultural luminaries of the second half of the twentieth century. Introduced to the arts of Africa and Oceania in the 1960s, he formed a large and varied collection. Among his artworks to be featured at Lempertz will be several lime spatulas from the Admiralty Islands that were collected during the voyage of La Korrigane in 1935.

The taste of other collectors will be evident in choice pieces, such as a Mossi figure from Burkina Faso, once part of the 1973 exhibition on Upper Volta organized by Henri Kamer, and a group of neckrests from Africa and Oceania, sourced by their current owner from the renowned British dealer John Hewett.
