BRUSSELS—For several years now, the BRAFA art fair has become the major winter meeting place for lovers of non-European art, thanks to the inclusion of high-quality examples of classical African and Oceanic art, a situation that by now has become the norm for this prestigious Brussels generalist fair.
From January 28–February 4, 2024, BRAFA will welcome more than 130 exhibitors from fourteen countries to the Brussels Expo site. Among these will be Galerie Claes and Galerie Serge Schoffel, both based in Brussels; Galerie Montagut from Barcelona; Galerie Flak from Paris; Dalton Somaré from Milan; and Finch & Co, with locations in London and Brussels.
Excellence and eclecticism will be the hallmarks of the works offered by well-established and internationally recognized dealers. Aficionados in search of fine classic African and Oceanic works will recognize an elegant female Dan figure from Côte d’Ivoire at Dalton Somaré, an emblematic Kota reliquary figure from Gabon at Didier Claes, and a beautiful Tongan headrest at Finch & Co.
Those wishing to enrich their collections with more daring pieces will be attracted by the Bamileke Ku’ngan secret society mask from Cameroon offered by Serge Schoffel or the Jukun figure from Nigeria brought by Montagut, to name but two works of many.
True to its predilection for thematic focus, Galerie Flak will offer, among other artworks, an exceptional collection of Hopi and Zuni kachina figures. This reflects the gallery’s commitment to the promotion of these singular and poetic figures used by the Pueblo populations of the American Southwest to instruct new generations in their ancestral myths and tradi- tions. The gallery has been a consistent resource for these since the Esprit Kachina exhibition it organized twenty years ago.
Last but not least, the display of the show’s vice president, Didier Claes, will feature a selection of contemporary works from Africa, including a painting by Congolese artist Vitshois Mwilambwe Bondo.
