The Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, near the California/Oregon border, was established in 1975. It includes a Wintu Indian archaeological site and an accompanying museum display. A storage facility was built off-site in the 1980s. The museum’s collection includes Native American Wintu objects obtained through field collection over the last thirty years, primarily obsidian pieces, projectile points, and various tools that date prehistory to over 5,000 years old. Though the public facility has very few objects on display, the total collection of Wintu artifacts is in excess of 90,000 objects. Storage is accessible mainly by scholarly or research requests.
