The Museum of the University of Groningen, which bears the name of a professor of its department of theology, was created thanks to the efforts of collector and professor Theo Van Baaren. The Oceanic and African collection which he assembled beginning in the 1940s are of particular note, the former consisting of some 1,000 pieces and the latter of some 800. The museum has about 9,000 objects in all, including the Asian collections of the Princessehof of Leeuwarden and of the Tropisch Landbouwmuseum of Deventer, acquired in 1971.
The museum, unfortunately, closed its doors in June of 2003, and the pieces are being held in storage at the university, awaiting a move to another destination.
