The University Gallery was founded in 1978 from collections begun in the 1920s. The Mineralogical Museum was founded in 1971 and includes the Paul R. Jones Collection of African American Art, founded in 2004. The university collection holds 200 African, fifty Oceanic, ten Indonesian, 500 pre-Columbian, and seventy-five historic and contemporary Native American objects. All were acquired by donation. The pre-Columbian and African collections, although small, are comprehensive in their representation of many cultures. All are in storage but are accessible to researchers by appointment with the curator.
