Although Dickinson College began acquiring works of art in the mid-1800s, there was no formal museum established until 1983. The college’s old gymnasium was renovated in 1982 and rededicated as the Emil R. Weiss Center for the Arts, which includes The Trout Gallery, Rubendall Recital Hall, and the Departments of Music and Art & Art History. The museum displays selections of its permanent collection and hosts five temporary exhibitions each year.
The gallery’s tribal art holdings consist of over 300 pieces, of which most are from West Africa. It also features seventy-four objects from New Guinea and twenty-eight from Java, as well as thirty-eight Native American works.
Only a small percentage of the collection is on display. Storage is accessible to researchers by appointment.
