The museum, built in 1972, resembles the adobe of Pierson B. Reading, Shasta County’s first permanent white settler. The building is surrounded by an outside display area featuring various aspects of Northern California history.
There are about 500 tribal objects in the collection, mainly baskets and tools that are augmented by a historic photo archive. Most of the material was donated by local residents and Native Americans. They are typically kept in storage unless they are needed for a specific display.
