Founded in 1935, The Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College has a permanent collection of approximately 7,500 art objects, which span 3,000 years and the majority of the world’s cultures. Objects from the collection are used in classes for teaching purposes, displayed in campus exhibitions, and loaned to other institutions for exhibition worldwide.
The current building, which opened in 1993, houses African sculpture and masks that are mostly tourist objects as well as 194 authentic pre-Columbian and Native American pottery objects, largely from the collection of Edward Nagel. None of the tribal and pre-Columbian objects are on permanent display, but they can be viewed by appointment.
