The ethnography section of this natural history museum is its oldest. It consists of pieces, some over 100 years old, from Indonesia, Africa, and North America. The well-documented collection is largely made up of pieces collected by the Fathers of Saint Louis and the missionary order of the White Fathers. Space limitations allow for only part of the collection to be on display.
Currently, works from the Democratic Republic of Congo are on view. An exhibition hall called Vivre au bord de la rivière (Life along the shore of the river) is devoted to the culture of the peoples who live along the shores of the Zaire River, and includes both contemporary and traditional works. An imposing nail fetish is among the highlights of the collection.
