The Museum of Craft & Folk Art is the only museum of its kind in Northern California. Founded in San Francisco in 1983, the museum moved from Fort Mason downtown to the Yerba Buena Center in November 2005. The museum is a non-collecting institution and is focused on mounting temporary exhibitions. The museum’s craft exhibitions emphasize the work of skilled artists giving new life to glass, clay, fiber, wood, and metal as vessels, clothing, furniture, and jewelry. In addition to contemporary craft, the museum also addresses American folk art and traditional cultural art from around the world. Accompanying its exhibitions are educational programs and publications dedicated to the understanding of human expression, ranging from utilitarian objects to contemporary art.
