Created by Philippe Picot de la Peyrouse in 1794, and located in a seventeenth century monastery, the museum did not really open its doors until 1865. Reopened in 2008, the museum has undergone extensive renovation since 1997 and its rich collection of Oceanic ethnographic items has been complemented by acquisitions of African objects over the last fifteen years.
