Formerly the Musée de l’Education, this institution was created in 1904 and holds a collection of artistic and ethnographic pieces that constitute an interesting panorama of many traditional cultures. The presentation of its works from Oceania, Africa, and the Americas is distinctly didactic and endeavors to examine the stages of human life from birth to death, as well as the daily lives of people everywhere in the world. A korwar reliquary is shown alongside ibeji twin figures, to evoke the relations between the living and the dead. In another display, nail fetishes, a Yoruba Shango staff, and a group of Nias sculptures together express the relationship between man, his search for answers, and his deities.
The museum amazes with the diversity of its collections, and with its innovative and incisive presentation.
