The museum was founded in 1933 by Baron Napoleon Gourgaud (1881–1944), an avid traveler and hunter, to house the zoological and ethnographic collections he brought back with him from his voyages to Africa. A major piece in the museum is the dromedary ridden by Napoleon Bonaparte, which is exhibited amid African objects that include a Bamum drum, Kota reliquary figures, Baule statuettes, Masai shields, Central African weapons and a Tsogho mask given by Paul Guillaume.
