Founded in 1864 by the Société Dunoise d’Archéologie, this museum has enriched its collection over time, especially with the important gift in 1897 of the Marquis Léonce de Tarragon. The 3,000 specimens, birds, mammals, and African and Oceanic ethnographic objects that made up this collection necessitated the creation of a new exhibition space. The Oceanic objects in the collection have been at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres since 1999. The museum has recently undergone a phase of renovation which began in October 2005.
