In addition to its rich collections of classical fine arts and archaeological material, the museum has several Iroquois and Illinois Indian works, including two painted caribou hides, rare examples of the art of a life way that disappeared three centuries ago. It also has objects from elsewhere in the Americas, as well as from Oceania, Africa, Madagascar, Asia, island Indonesia, Australia, and the Arctic. The ethnographic collections are displayed only during temporary exhibitions, but are currently being studied and are available to researchers.
