This museum was founded in 1836 and while it is one of the largest in the area, its exhibits are relatively modest. Its early collection dates from the 1830s and includes both purchases, gifts, and bequests. The donations of a founding member, Jules Lhomme, consisted of some 3,000 objects that were of special importance. A more recent gift was made by French ethnologist Bohumil Holas, which consists of material from West African cultures. It includes Senufo kafigueledyo magic figures and a group of Lobi statuettes from Burkina Faso. The African collection includes interesting Bidjogo, Balante, Mende, Toma, Dogon, Bamana, Mossi, Lobi, Dru, We, Bete, Ashanti, Fon, Yoruba, Kota, Vili, Yaka, Yombe, Pende, and Luba works.
