Founded in 1974, this museum inherited the contents of the former Musée de Papeete formed in 1917 by the Société des Etudes Océaniennes. Its ethnographic material consists of objects from French Polynesia. There is a room devoted to Tikis of the Marquesas Islands and a variety of objects from the Society Islands, the Austral Islands, and the Tuamotu Archipelago, while material from the Gambier Islands is poorly represented. The museum recently acquired material formerly in the Polynesian collection of James Hooper.
