The Musée de la Médecine is located in the heart of the Erasmus campus of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. It was recently created and houses a collection of more than 1,500 objects, which began to be acquired through the initiative of the museum’s current curator, Professor Appelboom. The first non-European objects to enter the collection were acquired in 1998 in conjunction with a show on medicine in Pre-Columbian cultures. They have since been placed on permanent display on the top floor of the building in a sober and elegant exhibition space. This collection includes primarily archaeological material from the cultures of Central and South America. The museum is planning a show on African medicine for 2004, and is adding to its collection of African statues and masks, which are currently kept in storage.
