The history of the Musée de l’Armée began with a young military officer who was inspired by the Universal Exposition of 1910 to assemble a collection of weapons of all kinds illustrating Belgium’s military past. In 1923 the enlarged collection was installed in the buildings of the Parc du Cinquantenaire.
It includes about 800 weapons from non-European cultures in Africa, Oceania, Indonesia, the Near East, and Asia. Only a selection of these objects is on permanent view, most notably a group of spears, throwing knives, and shields from the former Belgian Congo.
Worth noting is the presence of artifacts from Southeast Asia, which are on loan from the Porte de Hal Museum and were brought to Belgium at the end of the nineteenth century.
