Alongside works by Picasso, Soulage, and Léger, the museum exhibits an ensemble of ethnographic works that entered its collections at the beginning of the twentieth century. Murice Lallemand, curator of the Musé d’Art et d’Industrie, juxtaposed some one hundred classical African pieces from this collection with works of modern Western art in the 1956 exhibition L’Art de l’Afrique Noire et l’Epoque Nègre de Quelques Artistes Contemporains (The Art of Africa and the African Period of Some Contemporary Artists). In 1987, the museum received a gift of some sixty objects from Jacqueline Victor-Brauner, which considerably enriched its holdings from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. The museum’s most important pieces include an Amazonian beaten bark mask and an impressive openwork kwonro crest from Côte d’Ivoire.
