Founded in 1859, the museum houses Greek and Etruscan objects from the Campana Collection, and Oceanic material from several donations made by the Lessons Brothers. Natives of Rochefort, the brothers were pharmacists and naturalists, and accompanied navigator Dumont d’Urville to the South Seas on board the vessel La Coquille. They returned with primarily Polynesian objects of great quality, and also gave the museum a collection of African masks and fetishes.
