The curiosity cabinet assembled by fervent collector Auguste Grasset in the second half of the nineteenth century reflects his very definite taste for exotic ethnographic objects. Pieces from the Lapérouse expedition may be seen side-by-side with North American Indian works from “New France” (Canada), including two fine Great Lakes wooden dishes. Most of the museum’s Oceanic collection is on display, but a group of tapa cloths and a Maori cloak are kept in the reserves.
