The Moesgård Museum, located ten kilometers south of the city of Århus, is devoted largely to Danish archaeology and cultural history. Surrounded by rural woodlands, the museum is housed partially in the historic Moesgård Manor, which since the time of the museum's opening has been accompanied by more recent supplemental facilities. The museum is also partnered with the Institute of Anthropology, Archaeology, and Linguisitics at the University of Århus, and the combined activities of the two entities have made necessary the construction of a new, larger museum, which is to be located just nearby the existing complex and is scheduled to open in 2011.
In addition to its focus on Danish history, the Moesgård Museum also contains a 40,000-item collection of ethnographic material which was seeded with the 1947 acquisition of the collection resulting from Henning Haslund-Christensen's third Danish expedition to Central Asia. This Central Asian emphasis was enlarged upon through the latter half of the twentieth century, resulting in an outstanding group of material from nomadic Asian cultures. The ethnographic collection also contains a large number of objects from Africa, the Arabian Gulf, South and Southeast Asia, the Near East, Oceania, and South and Central America.
