Operated by the Chautauqua County Historical Society, which was begun in 1883, the society’s collection has been located at the McClurg Museum since 1950. The 1820 museum house is on the National Register of Historic Places and is owned by the Village of Westfield. One room in the lower level of the house is devoted to early American Indian artifacts. Items on display include Iroquois pottery excavated in the late 1920s and restored, as well as examples of pottery from a Ripley, New York, site excavated in 1906 believed to be from the Erie tribe. Stone tools, adzes, axes, points, scrapers, and basket containers make up the rest of the collection. All the items were donated to the society by members and most of the collection is on display.
