Completed in 2007, the Leeds Museums Discovery Centre is an open storage complex containing the collections of the Leeds Museums. It contains over a million items in diverse collections begun as early as 1819, from biology to Classical archaeology, European fine art to industrial technology. The Discovery Centre holds the ethnographic art collection once housed at the former Leeds City Museum, which closed in 1999 and reopened at a new location in Leeds' Millennium Square in 2008, featuring a gallery dedicated to African culture. The collection consists of 8–10,000 items from indigenous cultures the world over, with particular strengths in Asian and African masks and sculpture, North American beadwork, Peruvian pottery, and nineteenth-century Oceanic art.
