The museum was founded in 1938 by the Dutch government and owes its name and existence to the exceptional collection of Helene Kröller-Müller (1869–1939). European art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is the heart of the museum’s holdings, and include a famous group of works by Van Gogh.
Mrs. Kröller-Müller’s collection also included a number of Asian objects, illustrating her interest for non-European art, that the museum has pursued through an acquisition policy that includes such objects. The goal of these purchases has been, above all, to illustrate the strength of the bond between contemporary/modern European art and tribal art.
Most of the museum’s holdings from West Africa and New Guinea are held in storage but a few pieces are on permanent display.
