Designed by Philip Johnson in 1964, the Kreeger Museum showcases David and Carmen Kreeger’s personal collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century paintings and sculptures, along with examples of traditional African and Asian sacred art. It has been open to the public since 1994. There are approximately thirty-five tribal artifacts on view at any one time. All pieces were collected by the Kreegers, mainly during their active collecting years between 1958 and 1972. They were advised by personal friend, collector, and curator Warren Robbins, and a number of pieces were purchased from the noted Helena Rubenstein Collection in New York. The collection includes Baule ancestor figures and Bambara, Mossi, Bobo, Baga, Mende, Ngere, and Senufo masks, among other things. The majority of the objects are on display. Storage is not accessible to the public.
