Since the split of the Université de Louvain, the Flemish part holds more than 1,500 objects collected in the Belgian Congo under the initiative of Edouard de Jonghe for the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce. The missionaries of Scheut, who were stationed in the Mayombe area, amassed a large number of pieces and substantial documentation on Yombe culture, with the assistance of Leo Bittremieux, an expert on this part of the Congo. The collection was donated to the Flemish part of the university in accordance with the wishes of the congregation.
Three important nail fetishes and a group of Pfemba funerary statuettes are among the highlights of the collection. The Timmermans-Haems-Onst collection was recently loaned to the university. It consists of a group of thirty-five masks and statues, mostly from the Kasai region, as well as a group of Luluwa statuettes.
