For almost five decades, the Huntington Museum of Art has been defined by its vision of bringing the world of art to the people of West Virginia and the Tri-State region. That vision, nurtured by the generosity of museum founders and supporters, has led to the creation of a distinguished museum with a fine collection, innovative exhibitions and educational programs, a landmark facility, and an extraordinary fifty-two-acre site where art and nature blend in harmony.
The beginnings of the art collection at the Huntington Museum of Art occurred nearly fifty years ago with the substantial gift of Herbert Fitzpatrick, a prominent Huntington citizen who also donated the land upon which the museum was built. His outstanding collection of paintings, prints, English silver and Islamic prayer rugs was soon augmented by other gifts of individual art collections, disparate in nature, but uniform in their high standards of quality. The museum has a substantial collection of folk and “outsider” art, including paintings, sculpture, drawings, textiles and furniture, with an emphasis on objects produced in the Appalachian region.
