Operated by the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society, the Gatekeeper’s Museum is a reconstruction of the original cabin used by the “gatekeeper,” who monitored the flow of water out of Lake Tahoe into the Truckee River. The original cabin was destroyed by arson fire but was rebuilt as a museum in 1981. The museum houses historical exhibits that focus on the local Native inhabitants and the development of the Tahoe Basin.
The Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum was built onto the Gatekeeper’s Museum in 1994. This museum houses Steinbach’s personal collection of over 800 baskets, pottery and artifacts, representing eighty-five tribes, all west of the Mississippi. Every item in the extensive basket collection is on display. The other exhibits in the Gatekeeper’s Museum are rotated regularly and approximately seventy percent of the total collection is on display at any given time.
