The New York State Historical Association was founded in 1899 by a group of New Yorkers who were interested in promoting greater knowledge of the early history of the state. The Fenimore, one of the museums that is part of the NYSHA, came to the association as a gift from Stephen Carlton Clark. In 1995 a new 18,000-square-foot wing was added to the neo-Georgian building to house the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection, one of the country’s premier collections of American Indian art. It contains more than 800 carefully selected objects dating from pre-contact times to the present day.
