The facility opened in 1997 as the federally designated official interpretive center for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The extensive space features a collection of 7,000 ethnographic objects, of which 990 are on loan from the Winquatt Collection. About two-thirds of the pieces are points and arrowheads.
Most noteworthy is the basket collection from the Pacific Northwest and comparative pieces from throughout the country. Other objects of note are pestles, mortars, paint pots, purses, and necklaces. Only a small percentage of the collection is on display, but storage is accessible for research.
