Entirely devoted to music, this space, which is unique in France, is home to an important collection of non-European musical instruments. Africa is represented by 186 pieces, including tubular zithers, rhythm bells, flutes, harps, lutes, lyres, zoomorphic slit drums, viols, xylophones, and oliphant horns, one of which dates from the sixteenth century. The collection of Asian instruments is the largest, with 525 examples from China, Japan, Korea, and India, as well as some beautiful tribal objects from northern India, Burma, and Laos. The ethnographic aspect of the collection is completed by artifacts from the Americas and the Arctic.
