Wealthy late nineteenth century Renaissance man Antoine d'Abbadie, Ethiopian explorer, astronomer and linguist, had the Chateau d’Abbadie built for his personal use. The collection there today is notable for its Ethiopian shields. His collection of Ethiopian manuscripts has been donated to the Bibliothèque Nationale.
