Chaim Gross (1904–1991) was a prominent American sculptor who specialized in graphically-based works carved in wood. Located in Greenwich Village, the Chaim Gross Studio Museum was founded in 1989 with the mission to collect, preserve, display, and interpret Gross’ art in the context of his studio and, by doing so, to foster an understanding of how artists live and work. His downstairs studio is preserved intact, with his tools and many examples of his totemic sculpture. Upstairs, in his living space, a large number of objects, including his substantial African art collection, which was featured in the 1976–77 The Sculptor’s Eye exhibition, are displayed curiosity-cabinet style, to reveal sources of artistic inspiration.
