Opened in 1998, this cultural center memorializes the life and work of Jean-Marie Tjibaou––the late New Caledonian leader, diplomat, and proponent of Kanak culture––while presenting the contemporary face of Kanak artistry and the history of that society, which was divided and scattered two centuries ago. Housed in a museum complex designed by Renzo Piano, the center maintains a permanent collection of approximately 600 contemporary works by Oceanic artists, as well as a group of historical objects from the collections of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris.
