The Bruce Museum was founded in 1908 and, after an expansion in 1993, the building in its current configuration opened. Focusing on art, science, and anthropology, it houses a number of tribal objects, including 245 works from Africa, ten from Oceania, five from Indonesia, 300 from the pre-Columbian Americas, and 500 historic Native American objects. The majority of these objects were acquired through individual gifts to the museum. A Northwest Coast chilkat blanket is a significant object in the collection, as are the collection of West Mexico (Jalisco and Nayarit) ceramics, a pre-Columbian Vera Cruz ballgame yoke, and a fine Eastern Woodlands bandoleer bag. The museum also has pre-Columbian Peruvian textiles and historic Navajo jewelry. Very few tribal objects are on display as the museum has very little permanent exhibition space. Access to the collection for research can be made by appointment with the registrar.
