The Boca Raton Museum of Art’s roots reach back to the late 1940s, when a group of socially active women came together to form a civic club with the goal of building a small library. In 1950, the Art Guild of Boca Raton was born, and in 1961, construction of the first Art Guild building commenced, which was dedicated in the fall of 1962. This was the museum’s home until 2001, when it moved to its current location in downtown’s Mizner Park. Since its humble beginnings, the museum has gained the reputation of being one of South Florida’s leading cultural institutions.
It has a small collection of African art (188 objects) and 323 works of pre-Columbian art, as well as a smattering of Native American and Oceanic works. Major donors include Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Weiser, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Steinman, Mr. and Mrs. David Colker, Mrs. Edna K. Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Stephan Lion, and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bernhardt. A little less than half the collection, including all objects of note, is on permanent display.
