Vodun: An Intersection of Perspectives
|
By Bérénice Geoffroy-Schneiter, editor in chief for Europe of Tribal Art magazine.
Introduction A radical presentation of the Anne and Jacques Kerchache Collection of Vodun artwork is currently on view in an exhibition titled Vaudou at the Fondation Cartier in Paris. We talked to two eminent specialists for these unique objects, Benin scholar and collector Gabin Djimassé and Harvard African art historian Suzanne Preston Blier, to get their views on this unique exhibition. At home in Abomey, Gabin Djimassé lives Vodun culture on a daily basis. Not satisfied with just doing research based on direct interaction with practitioners, he avidly collects ritual objects and sculptures to save them from destruction or sale. He dreams of presenting them one day in a museum devoted to the many aspects of Vodun |
