Introduction
André and Pierre Dartevelle have vivid memories of their father, a geologist whose exploratory efforts in Africa considerably enriched the anthropological collections of Belgian museums. The former, a film director and historian, and the latter, a notable dealer of tribal art in Brussels, are the living representatives of this interesting figure. They described to us the extraordinary wealth of experience and art that is revealed in an exhibition devoted to their father at the Musée du Président Jacques Chirac de Sarran.
For most tribal art aficionados, the name “Dartevelle” evokes one of the most beautiful galleries on the little Impasse St. Jacques alley in Brussels, a few steps from the Place des Sablons. However, many are unaware that the father of gallery owner, Pierre Dartevelle, was an accomplished ethnologist and geologist, who participated in several scientific missions in the Congo and collected more than 3,000 specimens of considerable interest for Belgian museums.
