Introduction In Vézelay, France, an exhibition currently on view at the Musée Zervos sheds light on the role that Christian Zervos, the founder of Cahiers d’Art, played in the rediscovery of Cycladic idols. Did not these fascinating sculptures express an aesthetic that is simultaneously primitive and highly developed just as Oceanic and African art do? That, at any rate, was what artists, dealers, and collectors alike were soon to believe.
