The Remarkable Journey of the Dundas Collection
After 143 years abroad in private hands, the Dundas Collection of Pacific Northwest Coast art returned to Canada following an auction held at Sotheby’s, New York, in October 2006. The winning bids were mostly by private collectors, who kindly lent their newly acquired pieces to a traveling exhibition in Canada that started earlier this year. This fully illustrated catalogue details the events that took place when the Reverend Robert James Dundas originally acquired the pieces in October 1863, the decades of effort that was made to bring them back to Canada, and their eventual arrival that culminated in the exhibition Treasures of the Tsimshian from the Dundas Collection.
