This catalogue published by the Dutch Tribal Art Collectors Society (VVE) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary accompanies the exhibition in the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal, the Netherlands. The exhibition (October 4, 2008 through January 4, 2009) and catalogue show some hundred and twenty objects from Africa (85), Indonesia (20) and Melanesia (17), of which most items have never been published before. All objects are shown full page. It features some exceptional masks and statues with fresh captions underlining the art historical quality and the context in which these objects served. In three essays the historical, anthropological and (evolutionary-) biological component of tribal art and art in general are respectively explored.
The book adds certainly to the corpus of general literature on tribal arts through its descriptions of some rare and exceptional objects. The book may be ordered from the secretary awentholt@casema.nl
